Marken and surroundings
The Waterberg, situated in the northern part of South Africa, was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve and best of all it’s a malaria free area.
Being the northernmost province in the country, Limpopo is known for its year-round warm African sunshine, wide open spaces and magnificent Baobab trees. Seventy per cent of the Kruger National Park lies within its provincial boundary. The popular Waterberg area is rich in mineral deposits, ancient history and culture, as well as Big Five game lodges, and the best of all is that this area is malaria free. Maize and sunflowers plantations, savannah bushveld and nature reserves cover the landscape.
A stunning bushveld environment and a multicultural community, along with its rich history, gives Mogalakwena (the local municipality) its unique character. The area boasts fascinating ancient caves, the Big Five, San rock art, curios, local bushveld food and drinks like biltong (dried meat) and mampoer (moonshine drink), tropical gardens and traditional dancing.
The area is rich in minerals, platinum, diamonds and granite. In the adjacent rural area of Mahwereleng, traditional lifestyles are still maintained. Mokopane offers a wonderful selection of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, camping and 4×4 trails, to birding, angling and game viewing.
Just three hours from Gauteng, Marken provides the perfect getaway destination and the ideal stop-over for travelers en-route to Botswana, Zimbabwe and the Kruger National Park.
Lephalale [le-pæ-la:-le] previously known as Ellisras, is a municipal area aptly renamed in Sesotho to ‘Lephalale’ which means “to flow”. Lephalale is a fast-growing town on the banks of the Mogol River and is the last stop-over for safaris en- route to Botswana and the Okavango Delta. The town also has one of the largest open cast coal mines in the world and provides fuel for Matimba, one of the biggest air-cooled electrical power plants in the world.
Developed as the local mine’s golf course, the Mogol Golf Course offers a very demanding 6077 meter, 18 hole, Par 72 challenge and is listed as one of the top 100 courses in South Africa. This magnificent course is widely known for being an excellent winter course and is infamous for its monstrously big Marula trees (better known as Sky Bunkers). It winds through the Onverwacht suburb and demands accuracy and precision.
Situated in the heart of the Waterberg, approximately 50 km south of Lephalale, the Mokolo Dam is a bird and fishing paradise. It is well suited for water sports enthusiasts, campers and day visitors. Picnic areas are available for day visitors.
Tours of the area, as well as the rest of South Africa, can be arranged on request in association with Madikela Tours (www.madikelatours.com/). Arrangements can be made with Rudolf Badenhorst (Tel: 083 327 8666 / Email: Rudolf@madikelatours.co.za)

The Ranch in Polokwane – 1 hours’ drive
The Ranch Conservancy is home to over 30 lions, including 3 white lions and 3 spotted hyena, many of which have been groomed for human interaction. Our current pride and their forebears have appeared in a total of over 400 international movies, documentaries and commercials. Credits include such blockbusters as The Gods must be Crazy, King Solomon’s Mines and The Ghost and The Darkness. This “one of a kind” activity allows you to accompany lions in their natural habitat on foot for an hour and a half, under the guidance and supervision of experienced guides. Close interaction with lions strengthens mutual respect and extends understanding and feelings for conservation on the part of visitors.
Wildlife is particularly abundant in this region and visitors are likely to see most of the Big Five. The region is world famous among hunters! Hunting (both bow and rifle) can be arranged on request in the area (but not on Ehlathini premises).
